Roots Run Wide & Deep for New Prepper Movement

Basically the New Prepper Movement is a combination of historical events; from governance, living and production methods, to natural, human-made and metaphysical ‘disasters’ or ‘emergencies’; and society’s actions, reactions and responses to these various events.  To visualize this root system is to look into what got us here …

The concepts of civilian and governmental preparedness have been with us for centuries, almost as long as we have been curious about the future and what dangers it might hold for us.

Humans have been “Preppers” almost from our very beginnings.  We banded together and helped each other survive the world around us so we could grow and prosper.

When we formed settlements; we often built walls and moats to protect us, not only from all the predatory animals, but from invasion by others too.  We observed the world around so we could anticipate natural threats to our lives.   We even ‘commissioned’ patrols and watches to keep an eye out for any danger.

Read on to find out how this New Prepper Movement came to be:  From Drums & Bell Towers to Town Criers and Headline Hawkers; From Telegraph to Radio & Telephone to today's Internet.

It's been a long road to maturity, but our roots now extend wide and go deep ;-}

Bluemont, VA Ground Zero Spring Blast April 13-15 2012
136 Poston Ln
Bluemont, VA 20135
Time for the Spring Blast!
Hope you all can come & make it out. It's lots of fun & great people.
Breakfast & Lunch are on your own, but we usually have a nightly dinner that is shared. KGal & I usually do the cooking, but we haven't figured out who the head chef will be this year.
This is a family event, so bring the kiddo's!
Alcohol is allowed & encouraged so long as you share! (And yes I will have a nice bottle of American Honey to pass around)
As the below post states, this is a hike in camp. The trails down & up are more like deer trails- thin & enough room for single file trekking.
There is a privy set up for the lady folk's privacy. BUT no running water & electric. Sorry this ain't the Hilton.
There is a stream at the bottom of the hollar, so bring your water purifiers. We usually bring safe water up on the ridge.
Plenty of wonderful trees for hammocks & shade. Plenty of space to pitch tents & lean to's etc.
Plenty of hard wood to chop & plenty of fire!
Scott Gossman may make it out, but he hasn't confirmed yet. So bring your knives to play with!
I don't know about the guns, but if you are interested, please PM me so I can find out for you.
And bring rain gear & tarps. Usually rains around this time of year. Hopefully we won't have any!
And the spring blast has a lot more people then the winter blast.

As I keep looking for preparedness and self-reliance workshops, fairs and expos, it occurs to me that there does not seem to be a place on the web where all of these events are listed by state.

Soo – if anyone knows of an upcoming event (big or small) of this type please contact me at
USPreparednessSelfRelianceEvents@yahoo.com with the information so I can post it in my Events of Interest section of my blog NMUrbanHomesteader.blogspot.com.

Thank you and Keep on Preppin ;-}

Yet why do we celebrate this non-US holiday? Where do the traditions of wearing green and consuming Irish drink and food come from?

Wind Storms - Oh My!

Just about every corner of the world has experienced some kind of damaging or life threatening wind storm of one kind or another.

These windstorms come in many forms from straight line winds, downbursts, micro and macro bursts, tornadoes, typhoons, cyclones, tropical depressions and hurricanes. They have caused billions in damage, downed planes, capsized ships and taken lives.

Just to give you an idea of what a ‘plain old wind storm’ can do:

On Columbus Day, October 12, 1962, the strongest non-tropical windstorm (sustained winds of 150 mph and gusts up to 179 mph) ever to hit the lower 48 states in recorded American history struck the Pacific coast. The storm claimed 46 lives, injured hundreds more, and knocked power out for several million people. Many wind reports were lost because of power outages, with peak winds likely occurring after the power was out.

The storm packed hurricane-force winds caused $235 million in property damage ($1.4 billion in 2001 dollars). In addition, it blew down over 15 billion board feet of timber (valued at $750 million in 1962 dollars), from the west coast (northern California, through Oregon and Washington, into British Columbia) to as far inland as western Montana.

None of these storms are to be taken lightly!

If you want to know what you can do to protect your family and reduce potential damage from one of these wind storms and more then read on by clicking here ;-}
